Virgin Mobile is now established as the most successful mobile virtual network operator in the world, and is the UK's fifth largest network. Since its launch in November 1999 it has attracted 2.4 million customers, making it one of the fastest growing mobile network operators in history.
It has scored a number of firsts, including being the first operator to scrap peak rate calls, introduce a daily discounting tariff, the first company in the world to introduce an integrated MP3 mobile phone and the first company to offer all of its customers a content-rich voice portal with the launch of its 4321 service.

Virgin Mobile is aiming to become a hub for mobile commerce, to extend the personalization of its wireless services and to promote the Virgin Group's global expertise in the fields of entertainment, leisure and travel.
Virgin Mobile was looking for a partner who could help it meet these objectives by aggregating and integrating entertainment content from Virgin, and other sources, allowing a high degree of end-user personalization and delivering that content in a form most appropriate for mobile users.
In addition, Virgin wanted robust management tools allowing Virgin to capture information about its users, manage end user accounts, and to target services and special offers to users according to their specific profiles and interests.
Under the VirginXtras brand, Virgin Mobile launched InfoSpace Mobile's wireless Internet and Text Information services in January 2001, leveraging InfoSpace Mobile's wireless technology platform for mobile data services.
Choosing InfoSpace Mobile allowed Virgin to get services to market quickly, and to provide the capability to offer a common service offering across a range of devices from simple SMS compatible handsets to WAP devices. It is expected that the service will be available over PDA soon.
The VirginXtras service, launched only in 2001, has more than 100,000 registered customers.
